“Usually, you will not be given financial aid unless you have the equivalent of a high school diploma,” said Teichert. “If you’re just Googling ‘online high school,’ you want to be really, really careful about that,” he said.Īn accredited online school looks just as good on records as an accredited traditional school, he said, but a school that is not accredited could be a liability. Scott Teichert, director of admissions at Weber State University, said it’s important to do your homework when choosing an online school - especially if you plan to graduate from an online high school and then go to college. There are also virtual schools run by national companies. A quick web search turns up several public and private online schools based in Utah. The Millers are enrolled in Utah Connections Academy, but it’s not the only online school option for students.
“When they’re in school, they’re devoting their energy to school-related issues - not ‘She’s talking about me,’ ‘Do I want to go to recess? I’m scared,’ or ‘Am I wearing the right clothes?’ ” she said. The girls’ mother, Chris Miller, chose online schooling to have more control over their learning environment.
It sounds like traditional school, but it’s not - the Millers attend school online, at home. Megan and Sandy Miller get up early in the morning, dress for school, and are soon at their desks soaking up the day’s lessons.
